Najib's disappointing start

Malaysia's sixth prime minister, Najib Tun Abdul Razak took office earlier this month, replacing Abdullah Ahmad Badawi . In Najib's first week, he failed key tests that show he can be his own man. He lost important by-elections, failed to address persistent scandals and selected a cabinet of lacklustre appointees that has not evoked confidence. He ran away from the press, declining to address basic questions about his government.

Into the Depths

Moments in history leave their imprints on destiny. Actions translate into consequences.

I have often wondered what it is that was running through the minds of those who triggered Operasi Lalang on that fateful 27th of October 1987. They were about to trigger a chain of events that would put this nation on a collision course with its very foundations. They were about to cast the perspectives and attitudes of a generation of Malaysians who would in turn shape those of another.

A tight race to the finish

NEITHER Barisan Nasional (BN) nor PAS can claim to be in the lead in Bukit Gantang.
With campaigning entering the last lap, the central issue for voters revolves around Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) 10-month rule as the Perak state government before they were ousted by BN. Also in the limelight was the protest by PAS supporters against the Sultan of Perak for not allowing the state assembly to be dissolved.   read more...

Najib faces his first test on Tuesday

New Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will have little time to celebrate the culmination of decades of political ambition.
On Tuesday he faces a trio of by-elections — one for parliament and two for state assemblies — which are being described as a referendum on his leadership and the future of Umno, the principal member of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, and which conversely will be viewed as an indicator of the popularity of a rising opposition led by Anwar Ibrahim, the former deputy prime minister, and his Keadilan (Peoples Justice) party.  read more...

After reading today’s newspapers, Malaysians may come away thinking that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has:

Don't expect much from Najib

All is settled: Datuk Seri Najib Razak is our sixth prime minister. As any Malaysian should, I hope he does his job well. But unfortunately, as any Malaysian also should expect, every sign points to his being yet another lacklustre premiership. His track record in government suggests that his administration will not markedly improve on Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's; if anything, its only distinguishing mark may be the rollback of the few reforms Abdullah was able to carry out.

ne Malaysia??April Fool's Slogan to Fool You Again?

By comparison the incoming Prime Minister Najib Razak is luckier than outgoing PM Abdullah Badawi. It could be a blessing in disguise that former PM Mahathir selected the not-so-bright Abdullah Badawi as his successor in 2003. It could be a disastrous to have Najib took over instead of Badawi then because the public will make comparison between Mahathir and Najib administration. Now that Badawi screwed up big time people will make comparison between Abdullah Badawi and Najib Razak and you don't have to be rocket scientist to know who the better leader is. And the public ay?throw their support behind Najib's administration come next general election if he plays the right game at the right time.   read more...

The Bukit Gantang by-election

I arrived in Bukit Gantang at 5 in the morning of March 29. Headed straight for the Taiping mosque as suggested by a friend. It was full, overflowing at the seams. It looked as though we had taken over the mosque, with many of “the faithful” wearing T-shirts and vests with clear Pas and PR political colours and slogans written on them.
